teamLab Planets Tokyo is not the kind of museum where you only walk around and look at art. You step into water, walk through mirrored spaces, and move your body through interactive artworks — so what you wear can make a surprisingly big difference.
I visited teamLab Planets with my family in spring 2026, and there were three places where clothing really mattered: the water area, the mirrored-floor artworks, and the newer interactive area where you move your body almost like you would at a playground.
Here’s what I found practical, what I would avoid wearing, and what families with children should bring.
What should you wear to teamLab Planets Tokyo?
If you want the simplest answer, I recommend clothes that are easy to move in and that you won’t mind getting a little wet. For bottoms, shorts or pants that can easily be rolled above the knee are the most convenient.
- Best: shorts, cropped pants, or loose pants that roll up easily
- Think twice about: tight skinny jeans, stiff denim, tights and stockings
- For mirrored floors: pants are easier than short skirts or wide hems
- For kids: bring a full change of clothes
- For footwear: choose comfortable shoes and avoid heels if you want to enjoy the more active areas
Do you need to be barefoot at teamLab Planets?
Yes. teamLab Planets officially asks visitors to experience the museum barefoot. In practice, the point where this matters most for what you wear is the water-artwork section: you remove your shoes, socks and tights before entering, and some water areas can reach around knee height even for adults.
Before entering that area, you remove your shoes and socks. Some of the water is deep enough to reach around an adult’s knees, so long pants need to roll up comfortably above the knee.
Avoid tights, stockings and pants that won’t roll up
Tights and stockings are inconvenient because you need bare feet in the water zone. Tight skinny jeans and stiff denim can also be frustrating if you can’t pull them above your knees.
Very wide pants can cause the opposite problem: even if you roll them up, the hems may keep falling down while you’re walking through the water or trying to take photos.
If your clothes do get wet, towels were available when I visited, so I didn’t need to bring my own.
Can you wear a skirt to teamLab Planets?
You can wear a skirt, but the mirrored floors are the reason I would think carefully about the length and shape. In some artworks, the floor itself is reflective, so short skirts and wide hems can reveal more in the reflection than you expect.
If you prefer to wear a skirt, there is a useful backup: free rental shorts are available. The current official information lists sizes from XS to 6L. Ask a staff member if you need them.
What shoes should you wear?
For the water zone, your shoes come off anyway. But footwear still matters for the rest of your visit.
The newer interactive area includes experiences where you move your body much more than you would in a typical museum. From my experience, comfortable shoes or sneakers are a much better choice than heels if you want to enjoy these areas without worrying about your footwear.
What should kids wear to teamLab Planets?
If you’re visiting with young children, I strongly recommend bringing a complete change of clothes.
When I visited with my family, the water reached around knee height on adults, but children naturally get much more absorbed in the experience — and much wetter! I was very glad we had brought spare clothes.
Choose clothes that can get wet and are easy to change. A spare top and bottoms are useful, and extra underwear is a good idea for younger children.
Are there lockers at teamLab Planets?
Yes. The lockers I used were free, but there is an important detail I didn’t realize before visiting: the lockers are in the zone with the water artworks, rather than something you use throughout the entire teamLab Planets experience.
On my visit, I used the free locker area after entering and left my shoes and belongings there before the water section. Because the experience continues through several different spaces, I recommend bringing a bag that is small and easy to manage.
The current locker size is 23 cm wide × 34 cm deep × 37 cm high. Oversized luggage does not fit in these lockers, so avoid arriving with a large suitcase if possible.
My recommended outfit for teamLab Planets Tokyo
For adults, my easiest combination would be a comfortable top with shorts, cropped pants, or lightweight pants that roll securely above the knee, plus comfortable shoes. If you want to wear a skirt, keep the mirrored floors in mind and use the free rental shorts if needed.
For children, comfortable clothes that can get wet plus a full change of clothes is the safest choice.
Book your ticket early — popular time slots can fill up
If you already know when you want to visit, I recommend booking your ticket in advance. Popular dates and time slots can fill up well before the day of your visit, so waiting until the last minute may mean your preferred entry time is no longer available.
Tickets are sold for specific dates and admission times, and the official ticket store does not sell tickets at an on-site counter or vending machine. Klook is also listed by teamLab Planets as an authorized ticket agency, so it is a convenient option for travelers who want to book in English.
